These classes are popular and the room is much better suited for the activity thanks to the extra space and the natural light. This might sound strange as your probably thinking, well your on a cruise ship at sea what else can you see, however, outside space with a a sea view on some ships is difficult to find. There is nothing better than sitting on deck watching the world literally go by. Twenty-one cabin categories are listed on Balmoral’s deck plan—there are even six categories listed for single cabins—which makes it somewhat difficult to be certain what the accommodations you select will be like.

Lectures and the Arts Club special-interest program are popular, with classes in subjects ranging from gardening to painting, history to wine appreciation, and even bird- and wildlife-spotting. The town itself is pretty but the shops and cafes are the same as you would find in just about any city. We were on our tour in morning, back at the ship just before midday but had to be on board by 2,30pm which did not leave much time to explore, grab a meal etc.

Recently refitted as part of the fleet-wide refurbishment programme, Balmoral has 710 cabins ranging from singles to luxurious Premier Suites. The ship has a higher-than-average proportion of single cabins, making it an attractive choice for solo travellers, and there are also accessible cabins offering wheelchair access. The latter have large, well-equipped bathrooms and a walk-in (or wheel-in) wardrobe with a hanging rail at a height that can be reached by wheelchair-users. We did not go on any organised tours but contented ourselves with walking into the town both days. However you need to be aware of the safety zone, well signposted and with large posters warning of the dangers of going beyond due to the risk from polar bears! To go beyond the marked zone, you need to be on an organised tour, or with a guide, or have firearms training and carry flares and a firearm.
On some nights, we have themed dining evenings in the buffet restaurants. These evenings are often very popular so we recommend you book in advance to secure a table. Towards the back of Deck 10 are two more small restaurants, Avon and Spey. These a la carte restaurants are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and because of their shape they offer a lot of window seating. The bathroom is a good size for a cruise ship and I never had a problem with water or the plumbing. I drank the water from the bathroom tap every day and it was absolutely fine.
Personally, we felt this stop was mainly to refuel the ship and if we did it again we would use the time to relax on board instead of going out into town. There are also some optional theme nights, and most cruises of five nights or more have a patriotic "British Night" which proves hugely popular. Passengers are encouraged to put together a red, white and blue outfit, wave Union Jacks and sing-a-long during a night of British-themed food, music and entertainment. Passengers wear bathing costumes, or shorts and T-shirts, paired with flip flops and sandals for lounging by the pool. Cruisers are asked not to wear vest tops or swimwear in the restaurants at lunchtime; however shorts and T-shirts are acceptable.

Balmoral ship's drydock 2019 (December at Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg Germany) was for general maintenance and engineering works, interior renovations (public areas) and cabin refurbishments. We were invited on a day visit on the Balmoral Cruise Ship and this is what we discovered. With its Norwegian heritage of seamanship spanning over 150 years, family-owned Fred. Balmoral is the smallest ship in our fleet and is well-loved by all of our teams, and long-standing guests. She has wonderful facilities - six beautiful restaurants, seven bars and lounges, two pools and lovely wide open decks which are perfect for when Balmoral is scenic cruising. S you can see this grade of cabin offers much more space including a large double bed, desk and working area, a separate dining and lounge area and this impressive balcony space featuring an outside seating area and deckchairs. The cabins have a fresh, bright look with splashes of colour and attractive artwork, and the refurbishment has provided a contemporary, airy vibe with the addition of new carpets, soft furnishing and lamps. They are all fitted with European two-pin plugs (220 volts) so passengers need to bring three-pin adaptors.
The stage can also be adapted and elevated, depending on the type of entertainment too. The Lido Bar overlooks the aft pool on Lounge Deck 7 and offers superb, unspoilt views from the stern of the ship. There was also additional seating areas on the decks above and a promenade deck that extends all the way around deck 7. The Aft Pool on deck 7 looked a really great place to catch some rays and enjoy a cocktail. The pool was a decent size with two jacuzzi’s which are raised for the perfect view.
There is a complimentary room service for breakfast and light snacks which is served between 10am and 10pm each day. We were shown a variety of cabins and were very impressed with the decor and how spacious the majority were. We noticed there were many different shaped cabins so it is really worth doing your research to find the perfect layout that works for you. There are different options that are reasonable compared to other cruise lines.
While the small size of the Balmoral meant we could enjoy much better scenic cruising opportunities than on bigger ships that sail on Norway cruises, I was worried it would be too small to keep me occupied on a relatively long cruise. The Bookmark cafe looked another comfortable space to enjoy a coffee and a good book, with a comprehensive library and an excellent selection of chocolates on offer which certainly caught our attention. However , of everything we did on our cruise, this is the one that we thought was a waste of time and money. About 30 minutes is spent travelling out of town with 6km (possibly more) through the Atlantic Tunnel. We were very unlucky that our tour left before 9am in fairly thick fog so when we did arrive at the first stop, the start of the Atlantic Road, we really could not see anything. Now this is weather, totally out with the control of our tour guide and folk on a later tour had a great view of the scenery - but we had also been promised a restaurant with coffee and toilet facilities.
